Free parenting class planned

The next session of Kamalama, a parenting education course offered by the Neighborhood Place of Kona, will be held from April 12 through June 14.

Kamalama introduces traditional Hawaiian values that reflect universal positive parenting principles and concepts of living pono, or morally correct. It is a 10-week course with weekly classes of two-hour sessions. A certificate of completion is awarded to those who participate in each class. There is no cost to attend. Classes are held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

Community Seed Library program planned

The Community Seed Library will hold a program with Jill Wagner of the Hawaii Island Native Seed Bank, who will present “The Life of the Soil” at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

After her presentation, Wagner will moderate a round table for questions on any gardening subject.

Wagner is an ethnobotanist who earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. She has taught Hawaiian horticulture, restoration and taxonomy for years and grows native Hawaiian species for restoration.

Synchronized swimming for seniors

Elderly Recreation Services is hosting a synchronized swimming workshop for anyone age 55 and older.

It will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays April 13 through May 13 at the Kona Community Pool.

Attendees will get to try sculling, swimming to music and forming patterns in the water. No synchronized swimming experience is required but participants should be swimmers comfortable in the water. Cost is $10.

Attendees should bring a swim cap and nose clips as desired.

Nursing scholarships offered

North Hawaii Community Hospital has several scholarship opportunities available for students in the field of nursing.

The Peggy Dineen-Orsini Scholarship offers a $2,000 award to a resident of Hawaii County who is enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in a National League of Nursing accredited program. Private donors along with the Medical Staff at North Hawaii Community Hospital fund this scholarship in memory of Peggy Dineen-Orsini, who was a Registered Nurse at North Hawaii Community Hospital from 1996 to 2004.

The second scholarship is funded by the North Hawaii Community Hospital Medical Staff and offers two $1,000 scholarships to residents of Hawaii County who are enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in a National League of Nursing accredited program.
